I had a gain on the scale this week and that's a good thing.
Are you wondering how a weight gain can be a positive thing? If you've dieted for years, the scale is like the Wizard of Oz, all knowing. We rely on it to tell us if we've been good or bad. We let it tell us if we were disciplined enough that week. None of that is helpful and it makes us feel worse.
When I got on the scale and saw a gain, my brain immediately offered me a negative thought. That's what brains do. When that happens, the first thing you need to do is notice those thoughts. I let that thought come in, then decided it wouldn't determine how the rest of my day or week was going to go. Instead, I chose to think of the number on the scale as feedback from my week.
Next, I journaled about the week and asked myself why I chose to overeat several times. I realized I have been working a lot and leaving little time for the things I enjoy doing. I have been telling myself that some of the work feels hard and I don't know what I'm doing. I chose to eat to make those tasks more tolerable and to have some "fun." Food doesn't actually do anything but fix our hunger. It can't make us feel better or give us fun. From that journaling I know what to do next. I will schedule in time for breaks and to do things I enjoy. Even if you don't have a lot of time, you can find 2 minutes to close your eyes or put on some music and sing along. We all have a few minutes in our day to care for ourselves.
