How do I get myself to do the things I say I want to do?

Have you ever said, "I know what I SHOULD be doing, I'm just not doing it."

You probably know the habits you WANT to create and maybe you even do them.....sometimes. The problem is, you aren't doing the things that will help you lose weight consistently. You're only doing them when you feel like it, and when you're busy or exhausted, or it's just a regular work day, you don't always feel like it. Not to mention you might have menopause symptoms you're dealing with.

I've talked before about taking tiny steps when you're building a new habit. In order to remind yourself to do the tiny step, you need to create a trigger-a reminder to do the thing you want to do.

For example, you could tell yourself, "when my alarm goes off in the morning, I put one foot on the floor or I count backwards 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and launch myself out of bed (or roll onto the floor, whatever works for you).

Then, the most important thing, the thing that makes you feel silly, is to celebrate every win, no matter how small. THIS is what cements the new habit in your brain. It's like teaching a dog a new trick. When they do what they're supposed to do, they get a treat SO THEY DO IT AGAIN. I'm not calling you a dog, but the concept is the same. The easiest thing you can do is say something like, "yay me, I put one foot on the floor."

Other ways to celebrate:

  • Give yourself a high 5 in the mirror (Mel Robbins has a whole book on this topic)

  • Look at something that makes you happy

  • Look at a picture of someone you love

  • Do a little dance

  • Tell a person or a pet what you accomplished

It doesn't even matter if you feel lousy one day and you decide to put your foot back in bed and stay there. Celebrate!

Get out there and do something tiny to move you towards your goals AND celebrate.
